Symantec
Security Breach Puts pcAnywhere Users at Risk
Earlier
this month Symantec suffered a major security breach in which
source code for some of its older software was stolen. Recently
Symantec announced that the
stolen code could be used to compromise pcAnywhere and put
your computer at risk. The company recommended that customers
disable or uninstall the product.
"With
this incident pcAnywhere customers have increased risk. Malicious
users with access to the source code have an increased ability
to identify vulnerabilities and build new exploits. ... At
this time, Symantec recommends disabling the product until
Symantec releases a final set of software updates that resolve
currently known vulnerability risks."
Standard
Solutions stopped using pcAnywhere for remote technical support
several years ago. Symantec has not released a new version since
2006, and it's now considered an orphaned product. This means
it is no longer updated to protect users against security threats.
The
latest word, as of today, is that Symantec
has released security patches which they say fix the vulnerability
of the product.
What
does this mean for you? If your computers still have pcAnywhere
and you no longer use it, you should uninstall it immediately.
If your firm does still use it, you should disable the software
until you can get it updated with the new security patches,
or better yet, switch to a more current product such as GoToMyPC.com,
Logmein.com, or Windows Remote Desktop.

If
your 1099s are not dated "2012," you should restart
your Auto-Updater. To do this, right-click your Auto-Updater
icon, then click "Shut Down." Next, click your
Start Menu, then the Standard Solutions or Startup folder, then
"Standard Solutions Automatic Update."
If
you still do not have the new documents after restarting your

QuickTip:
Changing
the font
size on
the HUD-1 screen
You
can adjust the font size on the HUD-1 screens to make it easier
to read.
While
on the HUD-1 screen, click the View menu, then Toolbars,
then Fonts and Colors. The default is 10 pts, but if you
have a large high-resolution monitor, you should try 13 or 14.
This
only changes how the screen looks, not how the HUD-1 prints.
