There
are many aspects of network configuration that can
affect the operation of programs on your workstations. Through
our research and our work with Microsoft we have been able
to identify several causes of problems and determine solutions
for them. Some of these issues are complex. If you are experiencing
problems, however, we are available to work with your network
consultant to help determine the best course of action for
your firm.
Problem
1: There are known issues with running Windows
2000 or XP workstations together with a Windows
98 server. (If you have a peer-to-peer setup with
no dedicated server, the computer that holds your Standard
Conveyancer data is acting as a server for the purposes
of data handling.) We have for some time been advising
our users to upgrade their server if they are running
this kind of configuration. For more information you can
read Microsoft's article "Slow Performance When You
Access Files on Servers." http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q301952
Problem
2: There are some known issues running with Windows
2000 Server with Windows XP workstations. Not
everyone will experience a problem. However, if you are
experiencing significant speed issues with data handling
with this configuration there are ways of solving the
problem. For more information you can read Microsoft's
article "Slow SMB Performance When You Copy Files
from Windows XP to a Windows 2000 Domain Controller."

Microsoft
advises (and we agree) that it is best to have the latest
service packs installed to eliminate the known issues
with your Windows operating system. However, service packs
should never be installed without consulting your network
administrator or networking vendor/consultant. You can
read more about service packs and the bugs they fix, as
well as find links to download them on Microsoft's Web site.
