A new threat to your data: "Ransomware"
There's
a new threat to your Standard Conveyancer and other data. It's
called ransomware. Ransomware locks up all the databases, documents,
and photographs it can find on your computer and network, and
tries to get you to pay to get your data back.
The
fastest spreading ransomware is called Cryptolocker. Victims
get a message that their files have been encrypted, demanding
money in exchange for the encryption key. Another type of ransomware
claims to be a law enforcement agency that has frozen your computer
for illegal activity until you pay a fine.
Ransomware
spreads the same way as other types of viruses and malware.
If you take the proper precautions, you won't get it. Keep your
anti-virus/malware software up to date. Stay away from questionable
web sites. Don't click on attachments or links in e-mail unless
you know exactly what they are.
This
third point is a vulnerability for real estate closing firms,
which get lots of document attachments they need to open. We
know of several firms that were victimized when someone clicked
on an attachment or link that activated Cryptolocker. To avoid
this, you need to take extra time to make sure you know the
e-mail sender, and double-check that the attachment is a type
you normally receive from them. Infected attachments can be
sophisticated enough that they even look like the icon for a
expected file type, such as a .pdf file.
If
you get hit with ransomware, do not pay the ransom. The
experts say the perpetrators will just keep your money and not
do anything to help you. Call your IT consultant right away
to deal with it. It is vital that you have backups, because
you are probably not going to be able to recover your encrypted
data.

ransom note.

QuickTip:
Alt-A
for Auto
Pressing
Alt-A while on any screen in your file brings up a list of automatic
calculations and functions.
For
instance, to override Line 901, press Alt-A and uncheck "Prepaid
Interest." To have payoffs go to the HUD-1 (or not), use
"Payoffs to HUD."
Many
of the automatic calculations work in conjunction with the settings
found on the Attributes screen, so if you are not getting the
result you want, please call for help.
Also,
remember you can set your preferred settings for automatic calculations
and attributes in your Standard Model File!
